Moving Day Checklist

After You Arrive

  • Schedule your free moving estimate and reserve your move date as early as possible. (Summer fills quickly.)
  • Make travel plans for flights, hotels, car rentals, or additional transportation.
  • Begin packing room by room. Label each box with your last name, contents, and destination (e.g., “DR” for Dining Room).
  • Sort through belongings and sell, donate, recycle, or discard anything you don’t want to bring. Downsizing can lower your moving costs.
  • Arrange transportation or boarding for pets.
  • Confirm elevator access, loading dock times, and parking arrangements for moving day at both locations.
  • Complete a change of address with the post office and IRS
  • Notify doctors, dentists, and other providers of your new address.
  • Research any local regulations in your new city (licenses, home-business rules, etc.).
  • Create a simple home inventory with photos or videos of valuable items.
  • Finalize your downsizing by donating or discarding items you no longer need.
  • Use up food that won’t travel well or isn’t worth packing.
  • Contact utility companies to schedule service changes for electric, water, gas, internet, and cable.
  • Arrange childcare or pet care for moving day.
  • Request time off work to prepare and be present during the move.
  • Confirm your insurance coverage for the move.
  • Gather valuables from your safe-deposit box and make copies of important documents.
  • Double-check your travel reservations.
  • Service and clean appliances you plan to move.
  • Clean and wrap rugs and out-of-season clothing.
  • Remove any items you’re taking with you that are attached to walls, ceilings, or fixtures (curtains, lighting, fans, etc.).
  • Update your address with subscription services, newspapers, and deliveries.
  • Notify friends and family of your new address.
  • Close bank accounts and transfer funds to your new bank. Make sure all outstanding checks or auto-payments have cleared.
  • Defrost and dry your refrigerator and freezer. Use a deodorizer to prevent odors.
  • Check closets, drawers, shelves, the attic, and the garage to ensure nothing is left behind.
  • Identify fragile or pre-damaged furniture and show it to your movers.
  • Separate items you’re taking in your personal vehicle so they aren’t packed by mistake.
  • Keep essential items with you — keys, wallet, IDs, passports, medications, checkbook, cash, credit cards, chargers, and travel documents.
  • Disconnect propane tanks from grills (moving companies cannot transport them).
  • Clear walkways, steps, and driveways if weather is an issue.
  • Update your driver’s license, vehicle registration, and tags.
  • Review or transfer your insurance policies.
  • Update your will and legal documents.
  • Locate the nearest hospitals, urgent care centers, police and fire stations, and veterinarians.
