Basic Packing Tips
We’re happy to pack for you, but if you’re doing it yourself, here are some quick tips for a smooth move!
Being well-prepared is key to a speedy move—and affects local costs. Make sure everything is packed, including lamp shades and garage items, with boxes well-taped and clearly labeled on two sides. No loose items should be left on dressers, shelves, or under beds. If you’re moving appliances, have them disconnected, thawed, and empty. Items not going to the new place should be isolated or marked with bright sticky notes.
Some ambitious folks even disassemble furniture and stage boxes in the garage for easy unloading. But don’t worry—we’re happy to handle disassembly and deliver boxes right where you need them!
Packing an entire house can be overwhelming. If you are packing household items yourself, here are a few tips.
-
Leave clothes in dresser drawers and use wardrobe boxes for hanging items.
-
Remove lampshades and lightbulbs, packing them in boxes. Label boxes with "Top Load Only" to prevent crushing.
-
Reinforce the top and bottom of each box with three strips of packing tape.
-
Pack heavier items at the bottom of the box and lighter ones on top.
-
Pack boxes tightly from bottom to top to prevent shifting and crushing.
-
Pack by room, grouping similar items together.
-
Use clean, white newsprint to pad fragile items like glasses and vases.
-
Use paper to separate wood, metal, and ceramic items to avoid scratches.
-
Use towels, linens, and curtains to cushion fragile items.
-
Seal open spice and food packages with tape to prevent spills. Packing them in Ziploc bags works well, too!
-
Avoid packing opened bottles of liquids like oils or vinegars to prevent spills and damage.
-
Put hardware from disassembled furniture in a Ziploc bag and tape it inside a drawer or cabinet.
-
Wrap small items in brightly colored tissue to keep them from getting lost.
-
Wrap pictures in sheets or blankets and pack them in mirror boxes for extra protection.
-
Pack plates, stemware, and records vertically on their edges, not stacked horizontally.
-
Create a master list of all household items and personal belongings.
-
Number and label each sealed box with its contents and destination room.
- Write the contents of numbered boxes on your master list.
To ensure a smooth unload, plan where large furniture and boxes will go in each room. This prevents unnecessary moving and keeps the process efficient. Label each room’s doorway with sticky notes and have someone by the entry door to direct the crew.
