How Adamantine Spine Moving Began

What began as a gift has turned into a small business that supports a growing community of friends and coworkers on their way to visiting every county in the lower 48! None of us ever expected to be movers, and that includes the owners. But we love the satisfaction of a hard day's work done well, and the gratitude of a customer whose expectations were exceeded.

It all started back in 2002:

It all started back in 2002 with a gift. Mark Peters, philanthropist and software programmer, gave Eric Jones the moving business he’d founded but no longer had time to run: Adamantine Spine Moving. (Peters wanted the name of his moving company to be clever and to come first in the phone book: check and check.)

Time for Eric to take charge

Eric had just finished his MFA in Nonfiction Writing at the University of Iowa and, after spending three years exploring his thoughts and feelings on paper, he was ready to light out for the territories as a household mover. He took a job as a Nursing Assistant on the Burn Unit at the University of Iowa Hospi tals and Clinics to pay the bills, returned missed moving calls during lunch breaks, and moved local families on days off and week-ends while the business slowly grew.

Young Bill becomes owner:

Just before he turned to Spine full-time, Eric hired young Bill Hoke, a starry-eyed history major with a voracious appetite for Civil War documentaries. His life goal is to travel to every county in the United States, a total of 3,141. (And he's very close!) Eric quickly saw that Bill was smarter and more ambitious than he'd ever be, so Bill became co-owner a short while later. With his many talents in Salesforce administrating, laminating, accounting, and color-coding, Bill almost singlehandedly led Spine Moving through 16 years of growth.

Cliff and Emily open shop in Des Moines:

Long-time employees, Iraq-war veterans, Des Moines natives, and married couple Cliff and Emily Wallace became co-owners of Spine Moving's Des Moines branch in 2019, and they've been having a blast wowing customers and introducing Adamantine Spine Moving to the place they know and love so well.
